Cathryn Douglass grew up in the beautiful Berkshires of Western Massachusetts. Herman Melville’s Moby Dick was written just a few miles from her home. During her childhood, Cathryn enjoyed barefoot play, banana seat bike riding, and backyard circus performances with a small gang of likeminded children. She has happy memories of attending music and dance events at Tanglewood and Jacob’s Pillow, and for as long as she lives will hold a special place in her heart for the collection at the Sterling and Francine Clark Art Institute in Williamstown, and the view from the top of Mount Greylock in Adams. Cathryn studied ballet from age 6-13. She discovered long distance running and Nordic skiing in high school, and mountain biking and road cycling when she was a student at Colby College, from which she graduated with a BA in English Literature. She has completed the Maine Marathon twice and has also tried her hand at sprint distance triathlons. She began her practice of Pilates in 2004 with Bethany Mateosian, who later on became her trainee advisor when she enrolled in The Pilates Center of Boulder’s Intermediate Teacher Training Program. Cathryn is delighted and proud to be a 2014 graduate of TPC, and loves that continuing teacher education is available to her through its programs. As a reformed obsessive runner, Cathryn is especially interested in working with clients for whom the thought of suddenly being unable to continue an exercise regimen of running or cycling is unimaginable. For Cathryn, running is no longer about extreme muscle fatigue and tight hamstrings. She credits her regular Pilates practice with transforming this particular activity, which is now characterized by a lightness, ease, and strength that she never thought possible. She welcomes beginner to advanced students and looks forward to helping all who come through Springboard’s doors find more joyful “Aha!” moments in their practice and understanding of the Pilates method.
