What this checklist is

A 25-item checklist organized into 6 sections, designed to be completed during a 30-minute gym tour. The checklist turns a sales-driven tour into a data-gathering exercise. Sales reps are trained to walk you past the squat racks and into the smoothie bar. This checklist forces the tour to stop at the squat racks, count them, and open a locker.

A composite user, Marcus, 38, used this checklist to tour 4 gyms in Brooklyn over 2 weekends in February 2025. At gym 2 (a mid-tier chain), the rep skipped the locker room entirely and tried to sign him up after 12 minutes. Marcus insisted on seeing the locker room. The showers had black mold in the grout. He crossed the gym off his list. The rep lost the sale. Marcus saved $1,200 in year-1 membership fees at a gym he would have quit within 3 months.

The checklist has an opinion: the contract section is last for a reason. Do not look at pricing until you have completed sections 1 through 5. A gym that scores well on sections 1 through 5 is worth paying more for. A gym that scores poorly is not worth any price. Most people tour in reverse: they ask about price first, then rationalize the rest of the tour to fit the price. Do not do that. Read our how to compare gyms near you checklist for the long version of this framework.

Section 1: arrival (items 1-4)

#What to checkWhy it mattersPass or fail
1Parking availability at 6pm on a weekdayIf parking is full at 6pm, you will circle the lot for 8 minutes and skip the workout. Free parking matters more than the monthly fee.P / F
2Signage and entrance visibilityHard-to-find entrances mean the gym is poorly managed. If you cannot find the door, the owner does not care about new members.P / F
3Lobby cleanliness and smellThe lobby sets the expectation for the rest of the gym. If the lobby smells like sweat, the locker room smells worse.P / F
4Front desk greeting within 30 secondsNo greeting means the front desk staff is undertrained or understaffed. You will experience this every time you visit.P / F

Section 2: gym floor (items 5-12)

#What to checkWhy it mattersPass or fail
5Number of squat racks (count them)1 rack per 100 members is the minimum. 4 racks for a 400-member gym is acceptable. 1 rack for a 400-member gym is a no.P / F
6Number of bench press stations2 minimum for any gym over 200 members. 1 bench means 20-minute waits at 6pm.P / F
7Dumbbell range (lightest to heaviest)Should go to at least 75 lbs. Serious gyms go to 100+ lbs. If the heaviest is 50 lbs, this is not a strength gym.P / F
8Wait time for a rack at 6pm (ask members, not the rep)Ask a member working out, not the rep. Reps lie. Members tell the truth. If wait is over 10 minutes, the gym is overcrowded.P / F
9Cleanliness of equipment (check 3 machines)Run your finger across the handle of a treadmill, the bench of a press, and the seat of a rower. If your finger comes up dirty, the gym is not cleaned daily.P / F
10Wipes and spray bottles stockedEmpty wipe dispensers mean the staff does not refill them. Check 2 dispensers. If both are empty, fail.P / F
11Music volume and typeIf the music is too loud to hold a conversation at normal volume, you will not enjoy training here. If it is top-40 at 90 dB, bring headphones.P / F
12Temperature and ventilationShould feel cool, not cold. If the gym is hot and humid at 6pm, it is poorly ventilated. Hot gyms produce worse workouts and more odor.P / F

Section 3: locker room (items 13-18)

#What to checkWhy it mattersPass or fail
13Locker availability at 6pmOpen 5 lockers. If 4 of 5 are taken, the locker room is overcrowded at peak hours. You will not have a place to store your bag.P / F
14Shower cleanliness (look up at the ceiling)Ceiling tiles with black spots mean mold. Mold in the shower means the gym has not done a deep clean in 6+ months.P / F
15Drainage (look for standing water)Standing water in the shower or locker room means clogged drains. Clogged drains mean plumbing issues. The gym will smell worse in summer.P / F
16Towel service (if advertised) actually stockedIf the gym advertises towel service and the bin is empty at 6pm, the service is unreliable. Ask the rep when towels are restocked.P / F
17Hair dryers, toiletries, and amenitiesCount what is advertised. If 2 hair dryers are advertised and 1 is broken, the gym does not maintain amenities.P / F
18Lock policy (bring your own or rent)Bring-your-own-lock is standard. If the gym rents locks for $1-2 per visit, that adds $50-100/year to your cost.P / F

Section 4: classes and schedule (items 19-21)

#What to checkWhy it mattersPass or fail
19Class schedule variety and timesShould have classes at 6am, 12pm, and 6pm on weekdays. If only 6pm classes, you cannot come at lunch. If only weekday classes, you cannot come weekends.P / F
20Reservation system and cancellation policyReservations required means classes fill up. Check how far in advance you can book. 7 days is standard. 24 hours is too short.P / F
21Cost of classes (included or add-on)Included is the norm for big-box gyms. $10-25 per class is the norm for boutiques. Ask explicitly. "Included" should mean all classes, not just some.P / F

Section 5: staff and trainers (items 22-23)

#What to checkWhy it mattersPass or fail
22Trainer credentials visible on the wall or websiteNASM, NSCA, ACE, or ACSM are the recognized certs. If trainers have no certs visible, they are sales staff, not trainers.P / F
23Sales pressure during the tour (low, medium, high)Low: rep gives you the info and lets you decide. Medium: rep mentions the "today only" discount. High: rep will not let you leave without signing. High pressure means high churn gym.P / F

Section 6: contract and pricing (items 24-25)

#What to checkWhy it mattersPass or fail
24Get a printed copy of the contract to take homeRefusal to give you a copy means the contract has terms they do not want you to read in calm conditions. Read at home. Sign the next day if you still want to.P / F
25Total year-1 cost (monthly fee x 12 + initiation + annual fee)The rep will quote you the monthly fee. Insist on the year-1 total. Use our gym membership cost comparison worksheet to calculate.P / F

How to score the checklist

20 or more items pass: this is a good gym. Sign up if the year-1 cost is acceptable. 15 to 19 items pass: tour a second time at a different hour before deciding. The gym has some issues but may be acceptable. Fewer than 15 items pass: walk away. No gym is so convenient or so cheap that it is worth joining a gym that fails 11 of 25 checks.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Touring at 11am on a Tuesday. Tour at 6pm on a Tuesday or 10am on a Saturday. Peak hours reveal overcrowding. Off-peak tours hide it.
  • Letting the rep set the pace. Stop the rep at the squat racks and count them. Stop the rep at the locker room and open a locker. Stop the rep at the contract desk and ask for a copy to take home. The rep will try to skip all 3.
  • Signing on the first tour. Always tour at least 2 gyms before signing. The first tour sets your baseline. The second tour gives you comparison. Signing on tour 1 means you have no comparison.
  • Trusting the rep on wait times. Reps lie about wait times because they want the sale. Ask a member who is actively working out. They will tell you the truth in 10 seconds.
  • Forgetting to check parking. A gym with no parking at 6pm is a gym you will quit in 3 months. Check parking before you tour. If the lot is full at 6pm, the gym is overcrowded.

Frequently asked questions

Should I tell the rep I am using a checklist?+

No. Use the checklist privately. Telling the rep makes them defensive and changes their behavior. You want to see the gym as it really is, not as it performs for someone who is obviously evaluating.

What if the rep will not let me see the locker room?+

Walk out. The locker room is where members spend 10 to 20 minutes per visit. If the rep refuses to show it, the locker room has a problem they do not want you to see. This is an automatic fail on items 13-18.

Can I take photos during the tour?+

Ask first. Most gyms allow photos of equipment and locker rooms. Some do not allow photos of other members. If a gym refuses all photos, that is a red flag. They are hiding something.

What if I cannot tour at 6pm because I work until 6?+

Tour at 10am on a Saturday. Saturday morning is the second-busiest time after weekday 6pm. Avoid Sunday tours. Sunday is the slowest day and the gym will look empty even if it is overcrowded on weekdays.

How many gyms should I tour before signing?+

3 to 5. Fewer than 3 means no comparison. More than 5 is analysis paralysis. Pick 3 within 15 minutes of home or work, tour each with this checklist, and sign at the highest-scoring gym.
