A composite user, Marcus, 38, used this sheet in March 2026 to pick a tracker. He runs 3 times per week, lifts 2 times per week, and wanted sleep tracking. He narrowed the list to Apple Watch Series 9, Garmin Forerunner 265, and Whoop 4.0. How to choose in 4 steps
- 1.Decide your primary use case (running, lifting, sleep, general fitness, smartwatch). Most people have one primary use case and 2 to 3 secondary ones.
- 2.Set a budget. Under $200 (Fitbit Charge 6 or Versa 4). $200 to $450 (Apple Watch Series 9, Garmin Forerunner 265, Venu 3, Fitbit Sense 2). $450 to $799 (Fenix 7, Ultra 2, Polar Vantage V3).

Common mistakes to avoid
- Buying the Fenix 7 or Ultra 2 because they look cool. These are serious tools for serious athletes. If you do not run ultras or dive, the Fenix 7 is overkill. The Forerunner 265 does 90% of what the Fenix does for $300 less.
- Buying Whoop without understanding the subscription. Whoop costs $30 per month, forever. After 24 months you have paid $720, which is more than the Fenix 7. Whoop only makes sense if you genuinely use the recovery data.
- Assuming more expensive means more accurate. The Fitbit Charge 6 at $159 has GPS and sleep tracking. The Fitbit Sense 2 at $299 adds ECG and stress tracking. If you do not need ECG, the Charge 6 is the better buy.
- Buying a tracker without trying it on. Apple Watch bands, Garmin watch faces, and Oura Ring sizes all matter. Order from a retailer with a 14 to 30-day return policy. Wear it for 7 days. Return it if it does not fit your wrist or your life.
- Forgetting about battery life. A tracker you have to charge every 18 hours (Apple Watch) will be dead at the moment you need it (the long Saturday run). If battery matters more than smartwatch features, get a Garmin.

Garmin, specifically the Forerunner 265 or Fenix 7. Garmin has running power, recovery metrics, multi-band GPS, and 13 to 18 day battery. Apple Watch Series 9 has 18 hour battery and no native running power. Apple Watch Ultra 2 closes the gap but costs $799.
Is Whoop worth the subscription?+
Yes if you use the recovery data to adjust training intensity. No if you just want step count and heart rate. Whoop costs $30 per month forever. After 2 years you have spent $720. A Garmin Forerunner 265 at $399 with no subscription is a better long-term value for most people.
Does Oura Ring track workouts?+
Oura tracks workout heart rate if you manually start a session in the app. It does not track GPS or workout type automatically. Oura is best for sleep and recovery, not for workout tracking. Pair it with an Apple Watch or Garmin for workout data.
How accurate is wrist-based heart rate?+
Wrist-based heart rate has 3 to 12% variance from a chest strap, depending on the tracker and the activity. For zone training, a chest strap is more accurate. For general fitness tracking, wrist-based is good enough. Garmin and Polar have the most accurate wrist sensors.
Should I upgrade my tracker every year?+
